Vital Records

To apply for a driver's license in Minnesota, you will need to bring at least one primary document, which can include a certified birth record. Birth certificates are available from the Minnesota Department of Health's Office of Vital Records. The office retains birth records as far back as 1900, although certificates have been recorded electronically since 2001. Your birth certificate is available only to you or parties with a tangible interest, such as immediate family, a legal guardian or attorney. Birth certificate requests must be made by mail, fax, or email, and you will need to pay a free and present valid identification.
