Repair a Car

When your car needs repairs, take comfort in knowing that you are protected by Minnesota's Truth in Repairs Act, which applies to any repairs costing more than $100 and less than $7,500. Repair shops are required by law to provide a written estimate if one is requested, and they generally cannot charge more than 10 percent above the estimated cost. Shops are also prohibited from performing unauthorized repairs unless they first seek your permission and issue a new estimate. If you need to resolve a dispute, keep copies of all estimates and bills, along with a detailed breakdown of all repair work that was conducted on your vehicle.
